Tahmina Rahman in George Mason University’s Honors College has been named the V. Ann Lewis Academic Advisor of the Year, in recognition of outstanding care and commitment to supporting undergraduates’ academic achievement.

Sophia Chapin was the Honors College Multimedia Communications Intern from 2019 to 2021, during which time she improved the quality of Honors College student-, public-, and alumni- facing communications.

Celine Apenteng may only have one biological sibling, but she regards nearly a dozen people from around the world as her sisters. This “extended family,” as she calls them, and Apenteng’s travels abroad, have had a profound impact on her view of education. “There’s always something for you to learn,” said Apenteng, whose family has hosted exchange students from France, Moldova and Germany since she was 10. “Even if it’s not something new, the way somebody says something could impact how you think about it.”

How do you combat an overabundance of algae? Create a floating biological island. That’s what freshman Kennedy Ream did after attending the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment (WYSE) hosted by George Mason University, the National Geographic Society and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo as a high schooler in 2018.

Calculating the value of a stock or bond is relatively straightforward, but have you ever thought about the monetary value of an endangered species? Finance major and May graduate Eleri Burnett has.

“I feel like I held myself back for a long time not really believing in myself and then, when I started doing things, I was always capable of a lot more than I thought I was.” 

Joshua McLean (2021, Film and Video Studies) developed his skills doing more artistic film work through his company Lemonjerky productions and more commercial work in his capacity on the Honors College communications team

Nathan Crawford was the Honors College Social Media intern from 2018 to 2021.

Ben Rhoades was involved with sustainability and environmental justice at Mason and is putting these commitments into practice as a Watershed Specialist for the Reston Association.

Alumna Maggie Deely used HNRS 361 to build on interests she developed while at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation and plan an educational exhibit about insect life. It is now on display in Exploratory Hall.

At the 2021 Outstanding Achievement Awards Ceremony, Honors College Director of Communications Richard Todd Stafford was recognized for his dedication to Mason's Mission.
